Questions to Ask Before You Build

Six questions that separate a website you will still control in two years from one that quietly becomes someone else's asset. Ask them before you pay anyone.

Questions to Ask Before You Build

Most website disputes are not about design. They are about things nobody agreed in writing at the start. These six questions take ten minutes and prevent almost all of them.

1. Whose name goes on the domain

The answer should be your company, not the person building the site. Ask it first, and ask for it in writing.

2. Where will the site be hosted, and in whose account

If the hosting sits in the builder's personal account, you are renting your own website. Ask for an account in your company name that you can access.

3. What exactly is delivered

Not "a website". Ask how many pages, in which languages, with which functions, and what happens to content you have not written yet.

4. What happens after launch

Ask who fixes a broken page in month four, how quickly, and whether that is included or billed. A site with no support arrangement is a site that ages badly.

5. Who holds the passwords

You should have your own administrative access from day one. Not because you will use it, but because a business that cannot get into its own website has a single point of failure.

6. What does it cost to keep running for a year

Hosting, domain renewal, mail, and any licences. Ask for the yearly number, not only the build number, so there are no surprises in month thirteen.

Every one of these is cheap to agree at the start and expensive to argue about later.

If you want someone to read a quotation you have already received, send it over and we will go through it with you.

In short: you are not buying a design. You are buying control of something your business will depend on. Ask who holds it.
